slow shutdown& disconnect

two slight niggles but I'd like to fix them if i can:
1. when i come off line[dissconect]there is a time lag of
around 1to 1.5 minutes between clicking disconnect and
actual disconnect.any one know why?
2. windows xp shutdown seems to take a long time can i
speed it up?
