avi is a wrapper, containing many forms of video file, you need to find
which one yours is and then locate the codec for it.

How do you go about determining which format you have wrapped up in .avi?

This tool is what you require, it identifies the codec
(COmpression/DECompression)
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm
Once you have used the GSpot tool to identify the codec used, you can
download
required codecs from same site.
