All,
I Have 3 Gateway computers I am trying to upgrade to Service Pack 2. All 3
have refused to boot into xp after upgrading to Service Pack 2. I can get
them to boot into safe mode with command prompt, but that is it.
I have tried EVERYTHING!!!!! Even the F5 at the Starting Windows Setup
screen...updating the bios....nothing works.I am simply out of ideas..
Here is where I am as of right now....flashed the latest motherboard bios,
formated the hard drive.........did a fresh install of Windows XP - Pro,
SP1. This is a Gateway S500...P4 1.8Ghz, , 512MB DDR, 40GB Hard drive, One
cdrom, floppy and MX400 AGP video card. Has onboard lan and audio. Boots up
fine to SP1.....works great!
Next, the upgrade to SP2...have tired both a SP2 disc and from MS Webupdate
site. Everytime the SP2 update finishes, the computer reboots, flashes the
Windows XP Boot screen for a second, then goes into the safe mode/last good
config selection screen. If I select anything EXCEPT Safe mode with Command
prompt, it's gets caught in a boot loop....
This is the third Gateway this is happened to...have called Gateway,
naturally, they say to call Microsoft.
Has anyone else seen this??? IF so, any suggestions??
Thanks very much,
SteveM

When the recovery options come up, select Disable Automatically Restart then
pot back with your error codes

William,
Thanks for the reply.....
Where is that option??? All I have seen is the 3 safe modes, last known
good, and Windows normally (part of boot loop) or should I hit F8 before
that?

Well I downloaded the Intel Freq Utility as suggested in the SP2
Installation Guide.....
I guess the P4 in this box is ok....it's not a Prescott. Just a P4 400Mhz
1.8Ghz....thanks anyway. I'll check out the rest of the doc...
Thanks again,
SteveM.
