Sp2 - dumb question

Several months ago when I purchased this system, SP2 was just being
released. A lot of yelling, moaning, and complaining followed the release
about bugs, and problems. The builder of my system recommended that 'under
no circumstances' should I install this patch (I do have SP1a). My question
(please be gentle with me as I am just an 'end-user' and not a computer
guru) is there a utility from MS that will read/analyze my system and tell
me what drivers need to be updated before I install SP2? And possibly point
out any other problem areas? Thanks.

Bob, there's nothing wrong with SP2. When it was first introduced many
recommended to take a wait and see attitude.
Now that it has been out for awhile most of the difficulties were with
Computers infested with spyware, adware, trojans
and even Virus. Since your system is fairly new I would just go ahead
and try it. But first check for the above mentioned.
Use these sites. All are free except Spyware Sweeper and that gives you
a fully functional 30 day free trial.

Bob;
No, there is not a tool.
However if your computer is well maintained, no viruses, spyware, malware or
other known and unknown problems, SP-2 installation is more likely to
install without problems:

Did you tech give a reason?
If no reason was given, find a competent tech.
Find a tech that is interested in your computing security.
If no reason is given, that tech is afraid of new things and more willing to
have you hide under the rock with him.

Thanks you for the quick reply. I have just ordered the CD from MS. I'll
come back if I have any problems after I receive it and install it.

SP2 have got some new drivers, but all the drivers you got will work
with SP2, Drivers is not the problem.

The builder of your system have made you panic for no reason.
I have just built 4 systems for different people and have installed SP2
onto their system and they have got no problems. But saying that, I have
not installed it on my own system and I doubt I ever will. The reason
being is that some software I am using will not with SP2 installed.
since the manufacture of the program have sold the software to another
company and the new version is crap, then I am stuck.

My advice is install SP2, make sure all your software works after, if
not then do a system restore to get rid of SP" again.

That is not completely true. Many cases of needing updated hardware
drivers have occured with both SP1 and SP2.

The only drivers I needed to update for SP2 was:

My nVidia Geforce FX 5200 -- nVidia releases newer drivers now an then
anyway!
Ahead Nero 6.6.

The only new driver I had to install was for my wireless network with
SP2, all other drivers work, it is just a shame SP2 do not.

I got an Geforce 4 and SP2 had drivers for that I think,

know that some software falls over with SP2, that is why I have decided
to uninstall it.

One suggestion Bob. Disconnect all your peripherals such as scanner, =
printer, floppy drive, external anything and unplug your modem from the =
wall outlet. Just a precaution. I also uninstalled programs that came =
on CD's that hadn't been updated. I re-installed them after SP2 was =
successfully installed.

Certain versions of Norton Av, Zone Alarms and Office, (they've all been
updated), had problems with SP2. Just make sure you have updated any of
these to the latest updates if needed and you should have no problem at
all. Now when you get it all done you may have to contend with the XP
Firewall which is activated by default upon SP2 install. Good luck.

Windows XP default drivers do not have the complete DirectX/OpenGL APIs
correctly. This is why you need to install the manufacturer's drivers
whenever you want to use 3D programs (games).
