Increasing RAM to programs

I'm running Word 2000 in XP home. I'm handling BIG
documents, and I get a message saying that the program is
short of memory - the action will be undoable (which is
not actually true).
I have a lot of memory in my computer, and few other
programs open.
I want to increase the memory cache for Word. Word Support
tells me this cannot be done from Word itself, rather it
is an OS issue.

Any hints on how to do this?
