System won't boot up

2nd time this has happened in a 6-month period. System
running XP Home running fine, shut it down one evening and
come back the next day and system won't boot up. It gets
to the Windows XP splash screen and dies. Power button
won't work, must disconnect AC and remove battery to shut
power. Can't do system restore and Safe mode hangs up
just as well..

Help please before I have to completely restore my system.
