Have a Dell with xp and sp1 installed. Autoupdate downloaded and installed
sp2. Now every time I boot up, I get a message that there are corrupted
windows files and to reinstall xp from disk. However, it won't let me do it.
I tried xp system restore but it won't let me restore from any date. Keeps
telling me to pick a different date. After "OKing" the startup error message,
everything seems to run fine however. What's going on! How do I get rid of
this startup error message seen since the sp2 update.

Tnx, The Maine Loon

I've had a problem worse than this but still works whatsoever: Put in the XP
disk when you turn on you computer. Once it's in, turn the computer off
again. (To help reduce the possibility of missing the next screen) When XP
boots, at first you'll see a screen that says if you want to boot from the
CD, press 'Enter'. Press Enter. When the CD menu pops up, follow the
insructions for repairing Windows XP. This will not erase any data, it only
fixes corrupt and missing data. After I repaired, everything was the same as
before the error, all settings and such.

Don't really see an "error" message perse' (no #). Headliner is "Windows File
Protection" - Files that are required for windows to run properly have been
replaced by unrecognized versions. Could effect stability"
"Possible reasons for the problem..... Inserted wrong CD (different windows
product CD than the version installed"

that's it
