View Full Version : Can I safely remove SP2 updates?

I'm on a Toshiba laptop running XP Professional and haven't yet
installed SP2. On Friday, Windows Update notified me of 10 updates, so
I d/l'd and installed them. On Saturday, I could no longer access any
games on Pogo.com. I've reinstalled Java, both Sun and MS Java VM. I
deleted games from my Objects Library in IE and reinstalled. No dice.

In checking Add/Remove Programs, I noticed 19 Hotfixes with (SP2) in
the name. I've a feeling this is the source of my problem. Can I safely
uninstall these 19 Hotfixes since I'm not running SP2?

Please be gentle. I was fairly proficient with Windows-before-XP, but
now I'm lost.

First, check your System Information (All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Information) to see if Service Pack 2 is installed.
Information will be in the second line under the "Value" heading in the
right pane of the window, along with the version of Windows XP you have
currently installed.

Then reply to my post. We'll go from there.

Thanks for responding. As I said, it's XP Professional, version
5.1.2600
Service Pack 1 build 2600

I've had the SP2 CD for months, but haven't installed because of all
the problems I'd heard about.

Those updates marked "SP2" are incorporated in SP-2.
If you install SP-2, those entries will go away.
It is not safe to uninstall those updates since doing so will also remove
the protection they provide.

Check your firewall settings for your actual problem.
You could check Windows Update Installation History to see exactly which
updates were installed.
From there uninstall one at a time to see if issue goes away.
Or use System Restore to get to Date/Time before issue started.

Most computers having problems with SP-2 had pre-existing problems such as
spyware, viruses or other problems, known or unknown.
Preparing the computer helps prevent problems related to SP-2:

To add to Jupiter's response:

Their suggestion that to remove them would remove the protection the
provide would be solid, unless you did indeed have spyware, viruses,
etc., on your PC (and chances are you did) when the updates were
installed. Now, it is important to remove the SP2 updates, clean up
your machine, and (if you don't won't SP2) turn off automatic updates.

If you DO want SP2, after cleaning, reinstall it from your CD. No need
in downloading from MS.

Obtain good virus protection and spyware protection, and keep them
current regardless of your choice.

I'm not quite sure where we are miscommunicating.

I don't have SP2, I am still using SP1. So, if those updates are
marked "SP2" they are not yet integrated in my system, no? I have no
plans to install this build of SP2. There are simply too many
problems.

My firewall settings are fine. My pop-up blocker settings are fine. I
have no viruses, although I did have spyware months ago that I've long
since got rid of.

My system worked fine with it's current firewall and anti-virus, etc.
prior to my downloading these 10 Windows update. The updates are the
only downloads/changes I've made to my computer in weeks. The problem
only started after I downloaded and installed them.

I run anti-spyware programs. I run anti-virus checks weekly, and my
anti-virus program is constantly checking email and downloads. I don't
open attachments that look hinky and never from unknown sources.

This is the first problem I've had with this system in the 16 months
I've owned it.

I think I'll do the System Restore and take it back to last Thursday,
before my world turned into Frustration Central.

Thanks for your help.

Those updates are integrated in your system.
If you are like most, you have been installing them a few at a time for a
few years since they were all issued before SP-2 existed..
You need to keep them, better yet install SP-2.

Not installing SP-2 is precisely a reason you need to keep those updates.
You need to install ALL Critical Updates if the safety and security of your
computer is important.

Firewall and antivirus are only two thirds protected...not very good.
You also need the updates for more complete protection:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/default.mspx

As far as "I have no plans to install this build of SP2"
There is no reason there will be another build unless you mean SP-3 in
possibly 2 - 3 years.
Most problems are prevented with a well maintained computer.
