XP SP2 issues

I downloaded XP Home SP2 the other day and since then the My Documents folder
and Control Panel icon under the start button are dead. Clicking on them
activates the hourglass and nothing happens. This action freezes the system
and I am forced to control-alt-delete to re-boot. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix this?
