hi
can i install exchange server 2003 on a machine with Windows XP Pro (sp2) as
OS
for testing purposes in a lan of 4 pc all Win XP SP2

No.
You'd need to either install a server OS over the top of an XP install or
install a virtual machine such as VMWare or Virtual PC and install a server
OS and Exchange in that.

It will be easier for you to call Microsoft and obtain an Evaluation Kit for
Exchange Server 2003. This contains X Server 2003 [Standard and Enterprise
Editions] + Windows 2003 [Standard and Enterprise Editions] + Office 2003 - 5
CDs in all.
This way you have a full and 'proper' test environment.
Should you choose to 'buy' and implement the software, then you can buy an
upgrade edition and install over the top, without loosing any of you work.
What a good idea.
