Checked:
Advanced Options
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders

Search for files or folders named:
TRIED: *.*
TRIED:
TRIED: *.odl

Containing text holds:
long

Folder being searched is the specific folder that holds the following
extracted zip file:
http://tinyurl.com/4rbva

There are ALOT of references to long in the wintype.odl file. But
XP SP2 Search turns up NOTHING.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get "Search for Files and
Folders" to work?

When I take out the contents it returns everything that is
inside the folder as expected. But it does not search the
contents of these mostly ANSI files.

Thanks much for your time.

Search old newsgroup postings using google to confirm this:

Short answer, "Enhancing" XP to support Unicode character sets
means that XP now doesn't search all kinds of files to find
text inside, and as you have discovered, doesn't make this
"feature" obvious. Some have suggested punting XP search and
using other search tools that do work for this.

I tried FIND inside the command prompt. FIND /n "string" *.*
works well and even displays the line numbers. Just a little more
work having to type in the filename and configure notepad to
automatically open it... whew.

Earlier I kept trying grep, and for some reason I lost my grep
command. I forgot about the Microsoft FIND. I was baffled
by not knowing where my grep utility went... because I know
I've used a command-line tool in the past... and I've run into
problems in the past with Search, For Files and Folders...

And for some odd reason I hesitated to type the word "search"
into a search engine. It just didn't sit well for some reason.
