chkdsk runs fine on cmd but chkdsk C: /f runs into the
same problem. It goes into the disk check.. everything
runs fine and when it comes to reboot, it stops
responding. I have to reset my comp and there would be a
corrupted file bootex.log. I use recovery console to run
chkdsk /p to repair and everything goes back to square
one. could this be a hardware problem? :(

Are you by chance creating a boot log when you boot up? Click start--run--
type in msconfig--Ok--click--boot ini tab.

I ran msconfig like you mentioned and there's no check
on /BOOTLOG or any other options.

..Log of course is a log file such as an error log. I am running Windows XP
home edition and do not have a bootex.log. Are you running any virus detect
programs that create a log file? There are are a few things you can do. 1.
Rename the file so it can't be found. If you get an error saying 'file can't
be found' you can rename it to what it was (bootex.log) 2. You can delete
the file making sure it goes to the recycle bin. If a problem you can
restore it. 3. If you have virus programs runing, shut them down and reboot.
Investigat the file, bootex.log. Is it generated by chkdsk?. I would check
this for you but, it takes too long. .

I'm running norton antivirus and the bootex.log was
generated by chkdsk. I ran chkdsk /p from recovery
console to recover the corrupted bootex.log. It says
things that I don't quite understand though. lol. Anyway,
I tried installing Win XP from scratch again and i
realised that the scandisk works fine before I install
any drivers. I suspect that it could be due to the new
VIA 4in1 driver and it might be incompatible with my hdd
or mobo... not too sure. I guess I just have to live with
it at the moment. Really appreciate your help unknown.
Thanks a lot

If bootex.log is generated by scandisc you can delete it when scandisc is
complete.
