I had win98SE on c:, and I installed winxp sp2 a fortnight
ago. Both are working fine in dual boot.

But in XP, I am not able to post mails/news in Thunderbird 1.0

I am able to receive all mail/news in that without any hitch.

Firefox 1.0 and ie 6 are able to surf.

I have Zonealarm 4.5 free version, but nothing is getting
posted even if i shut it down.

I have nav2k5, but nothing gets posted even if i disable it.

I have windows firewall off.

Please help.

Thanks in Advance.

Error message please. SMTP server address please. Can you ping the SMTP
server? Can you Telnet to the SMTP server (port 25)??

Have you checked that the smtp setting is correct in your email application?
Obviously the pop3 setting is correct because you are receiving mail but it
is the smtp one that sends the mail. It may be incorrect or the server may
require authentication (you may need to check with you isp for this)
If yuo are suing Outlook Express clcik Tools on the main toolbar and then,
from the drop downmenu, click Accounts. In the accounts window clcik the
Mail tab. Highlight your mail provider and then press the Properties button.
In the properties window click the Server tab and check the pop and smtp
settings. Depending upon the isp they should read either:

Pop.<yourisp>.com
smtp.<yourisp>.com

pop3.<yourisp>.com
smtp.<yourisp>.com

mail.<yourisp>.com
mail.<yourisp>.com

If your isp has a .net extention rather than a .com then you should have:

pop.<yourisp>.net
smtp.<yourisp>.net

Alternatively it may be that the server need authentication before mail can
be sent. Usually this is simply your user name and password. Again you need
to check your isp for this. But if you need authentication if you look on
the server tab again near the bottom you will find a section marked 'out
going mail' and an option which say's My server need authentication. Click
the box on the left of this option to enable it and then click the settings
box. The default setting is 'use the same settings as incoming mail'

I have tried with three smtp servers.

First one was standalone Advanced smtp server.

Then I removed above and installed standlone QK smtp server.

Now I have installed that too, and am using my gmail smtp
server.

in xp, it is not able to post through any of these.
---

Then, just to post messages/mails, I set my win98
Thunderbird to use the same profile/ folders/ files as was
set in xp, and I was able to post in 98 in all three above
cases.

Not a single change was required in my mails. I downloaded
in xp, composed replies in xp, shutdown, booted to win98,
and it could send all mails. with or without zonealarm it
could post in 98, with or without nav2k5 it could post in 98.

All my software and settings in 98 and xp are identical.
---

When I hit send unsent messages in xp (Thunderbird),

A bar appears at the centre-right of the status bar in which
green rectangles keep on moving left to right, on and on.

It remains so for some 1 or 2 minute, and then I get a
message window giving this:
------------
Send Message Error:

Sending of message failed.

The message could not be posted because connecting to the
news server failed. The server may be unavailable or is
refusing connection. Please veryfy that your news server
setting is correct and try again, or else contact your
network administrator.
------------

TIA.
