I noticed when I was running the disk cleanup utility that I have compressed
files.
I'm not sure why MS would offer the chance to delete these files however, I
have questions regarding the compressed files.
1) How can I see what files have been compressed by Windows XP?
2) How do I uncompress these files without know what and where to access
the files?
3) Why are compressed files listed in the disk cleanup menu when they could
be very likely, system or required files?

System Restore Points are commonly compressed. In Windows Explorer
compressed files are displayed in a blue type face ( Details view ).
Restore points are in the System Volume Information folder. To display
the contents of this folder:

Hope this helps.

Gerry, thank you for your reply.
I deleted my restore points and still have compressed files in the disk
cleanup menu.
I guess I'll have to unhide the files and try to see what these files are.

Disk cleanup is not going to delete these files. You're offered
the option of compressing files that haven't been used recently.
Here's are a couple of articles that should give you a better
idea of exactly what Disk Cleanup does:
