I received an e-mail with an ".exe" file attached (April
2003 Cumulative Patch)from Microsoft Technical Services--
telling me to execute the attached file for a Security
Update.

I have not done this. Is this a hoax or for real and how
can I tell.

Please advise.

This is a malicious attempt to damage your computer and that of
others. Neither Microsoft nor other commercial software publisher
sends out unsolicited updates as email attachments.

You did not receive an email message from Microsoft. What you
received was an email HOAX from a devious imposter!

Microsoft "NEVER SENDS ATTACHMENTS" with email! They always provide
a link to their website. What you received is a HOAX!

You should delete this message immediately because the attachment
is likely to contain a virus!

Microsoft never distributes software directly via e-mail:

Welllll... that's not entirely true. I received this hoax email just hours
after receiving a genuine email from M$, with an attachment! That's what
made it so confusing. I called M$ & requested the hotfix detailed in
KB328213, which they sent me as an attachment to an email. Then I got this
hoax email. I'm wondering if the sender of that has hacked into M$'s
outgoing mail, or if it has been my recent participation in this forum that
provided my contact info to this hoaxer.
One thing you can do is to turn off your preview pane, so emails don't open
until you select them. Then if something looks suspicious, highlight it &
click 'properties' under File. Look closely at the details of where it came
from. When I checked this hoax email, none of the usual M$ address info
appeared in the source info.
