Can anyone help with this issue? I have a partial window
in the middle of my desktop that shows whatever screen I
was on last. When I pass my mouse over the window it
shows the hourglass. I cannot close the window. It
doesn't show up as an application running. If it can be
closed by shutting down a process I can't figure out
which one. It reappears even after rebooting. Seems
something is corrupted but I don't know what.

try doing these:

run disk clean-up and then....

type 'sfc /scannow' ( gap between 'c' and /) insert you windows xp
installation disk.

when the install window opens, close it. then click 'ok' on the 'run' box.

sfc stands for system file checker. it will take about half an hour and
check your system files against the installation disk to make sure that they
are still in the original state. if not, it will repair them.

when finished, open the 'run' command again and type 'chkdsk /r'

select 'y' to run chkdsk when windows restarts. then restart windows.
