This probably originated as a highjack or adware problem. However, now IE
will not start and I get an empty list in Add/Delete Programs. IE will
briefly flash on the screen but that's it. Further, I've tried Firefox and
AOL. They work but repeatedly tell me that they cannot find web sites even
though the DSL connection is on and active.

I am running Windows XP Home with the latest builds and IE 6.0. The machine
is a Compaq Pentium 4 with 512 RAM. I also have McAfee 8.0 and Spybot 1.3.
I also had Adaware Personal from Lavasoft, but it is now nonfunctional and I
cannot get connected long enough to download it again. I reinstalled Windows
to no avail. I then allowed it to autoupdate so I'm assuming it has the
latest. My daughter had used the machine to visit various chat rooms and it
was full of spyware and adware. I cleaned it up but what ever the culprit -
I have nonfunctioning software.

This is not a physical connection issue. The machine has both a wireless
and hard wire connection (only one enabled at a time) Other machines in the
house are working so its not the router or modem. Which ever connection I
try, I have the same problem.
