View Full Version : what's downloading in the background

I'm running XP SP1 on my computer and recently I switched over to
dialup (EarthLink) from cable. I've noticed that when I'm connected
to the internet, my computer seems to be constantly downloading
something in the background - even when I'm not doing anything. I've
exited out of Messenger and ran AdAware to make sure some SpyWare
isn't running in the background. I doubt it as this is a new install
and I don't have much on it. I can watch the download under 'Windows
Task manager' in the Network tab. It averages between 700 and 1400
bytes/sec. I've turned off 'Automatic Updates, background intelligent
transfer service but that didn't help
Anyone know what this download is and how I can stop it? With dialup,
I can't afford to waste bandwidth.
Thanks for your time.

Run "netstat -a" sans quotes from a Command Prompt while the activity is
occurring, so you can see the port usage. Could be there is a foreign IP
address that you can trace to another remote user/service and go from there.
You may have to run "netstat -an" and plug the IP addresses into the ARIN
database to find out what ISP is connecting to your computer.
To reach a Command Prompt: Start>All Programs>Accessories
ARIN: http://www.arin.net/whois/

I also have dialup Earthlink and noticed the same thing. I obtained a
packet sniffer and my computer was polling my connection and switching
to several different cities 525 bytes at a time. It wouldn't stop.
This will cure your problem.......... or you can manually do it in
Services.
