Hi,
I'm using xp pro with service pack 2 installed. System restore is
not working. When I try and get system restore service to start in the
services of computer management, I get the error- Error 15: The system
can't find the drive specified.
System restore is suspended on the drive because it says there is not
enough disk space, which is not the case.
When I go into event viewer I get the same error that the System
Restore Service service terminated because the system cannot find the
drive specified as well as saying the initialization process failed.
When I try and start it in the help and support section it says I
don't have enough disk space.
I wasn't sure if copying the sr.in_ file from the xp cd onto the hard
disk would do any good because the hard disk's file is newer than the
cd's file.
Does this sound like something that is sp2 related or could it be
something else.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Mark

Do you have more than one drive/partition on the machine. If so, it's
likely that System restore is monitoring all drives. SR is only designed
to monitor and save the XP system state. Monitoring other drives isn't
necessary. From the System Restore function, turn off monitoring on
non-system partitions & Reboot. If System Restore still experiences
problems you'll have to turn it off on C:\ (or whatever drive XP is on)
Reboot and then re-enable it, to purge the System Volume Information
folder of all stored points. While adjusting SR, it might worth changing
the default allocation of 12% of your drive to a lower value. System
Restore is really not a long-term recovery method and best to set it to
monitor 7-10 days worth of points. (500-1000 Megabytes).

I have two drives and three partitions on the system. The
c drive has win2000pro, the d drive has xp on it and the e
drive is a data partition. When I when to turn off the system restore
on the non xp drives, I got an error message: system restore encountered
an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please
restart your machine and try again. When I restarted I got the same
error message. The also got the same error when trying to disable it on
the d drive (xp).

Boot to Safe Mode, Use the Administrator account. Use Explorer,
View = All, Hidden & System files. The System Volume Information
folders should be accessible. Once you navigated into the SVI folder
select all and then delete. If privilege violations occur you'll have to
add/modify the ACL for Administrator to "Full".
Repeat this for the other Drives & Partitions - this should purge all
existing System Restore points and associated control files.
Reboot the PC and the SVIs should be recreated. Afterwards you
should be able to adjust monitoring & disk allocation.
If this doesn't restore System Restore, I would start looking at issues
with the Service startup for SR or other corruption problems.

You have received at least two well thought out replies, each suggesting
different approaches. Mine is ,that if the others haven't solved the
problem, perhaps a Repair/Install would be called for. Its simple and
doesn't do away with any of you settings.

Good luck!

Hi Mark,

I would first reinstall System Restore (SR).
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windows\inf folder.
Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.
Reboot the system.

Now Confirm that the Task Scheduler and System Restore Service are
running:
Click Start, click Run, and then type CMD then press enter.
Type Net Start at the command prompt and press enter. Make sure that
the two services are running.
To start the Task Scheduler or System Restore Service if they are
not running:
Go to Start - Run and type Services.msc then press enter.
Double click on Task Scheduler
Set 'Startup type' to Automatic then press Start and Wait
for the Service Control progress indicator to close.
Do the same if the System Restore Service was missing. Close
the Services window.

Open SR and disable all drives/partitions except the partition XP is
installed on.

Post back with any error messages you may have received.

For a complete troubleshooting guide look here.

It is not a good idea to monitor a partition with another OS on it.
And it is of no value to monitor a partition that contains only data
files. Also in a dual boot scenario make sure not to make any changes
to monitored files or there location while SR is not running.
