I recently installed norton firewall to my pc. Since then
(and this may well be totaly unrelated) system restore no
longer works. it either totaly locks up or after a
several hour delay shows a message about a corrupt or
missing run32.dll
As such I cannot install media player 9 as it first tries
to create a restore point. system restore was working as
the last point I made was minutes before installing the
forewall. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved (I am
only moderately skilled with the computer so no overly
complex answers please). thanks for your help

Duncan;
What happens if you uninstall the firewall?
If it works, try installing the firewall.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes all Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore.
Otherwise:

Some people have issue with Real player and System Restore (normally
different than you describe though)
They need to either stop using Real Player or System Restore.
Try to repair damaged Windows files this way:
Start/Run Type "cmd" ENTER
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have the Windows XP cd ready.

if you have just installed sp1 then there will be quite a few updates and
they are obviously updating automatically. some updates have to be done
seperate to others, so that could be the reason why it is restarting.
to use windows update manually, go to start, click 'run' and type
'services.msc'
from the list, select 'automatic updates' and DISABLE IT
you can still update manually by visiting the windows update website
