Since the last couple of days, I am receiving a message that my windows
messenger needs an update. I'm currently using 4.7.2009 on windows xp sp2.
For personal reasons, I don't want to install Windows Messenger 5 and want
to continue using 4.7.
Now When I click on 'What's new', the link takes my to install sp2 after
telling me that windows messenger is a component of Windows xp sp2. I
installed sp2 immediately after it was released and never received this
message previously. Does someone have a clue as to what is wrong here?
Thanking in anticipation.

It's a security update, v. 4.7.3, not 5

Just to clarify, the actual message I receive is that a new version of
Windows Messenger is available.

The latest version of windows messenger is actually 4.7.3001 and includes
critical security updates. If you install these updates you should not get
version 5 or version 5.1 of windows messenger.
These can be downloaded separately but you won't want these unless you want
support for Exchange IM and SIP-based communications servers.
I would recommend that you download the update as it is critical.
Hope this helps.
