Virus Scan

Using VirusScan 7.0 Home edition, can I just scan floppy, emails and
internet connections if so how? Every program I open, Word, Quickbooks,
QuickCad, Etc, takes forever to open and close. Why do I need to scan these
every time they are opened? If I don't can someone explain how to configure?
I have tried.
