I installed Windows XP Pro to my desktop in January to a
newly formatted and partitioned disk. Every day it seem
to get slower and slower at shutting down....and sometimes
it doesn't shut down, I just have to force the shutdown by
holding the ON key for 5 seconds.
Is there anyway to speed up the shut down process??

Mike, you may need to delete a bunch of TMP files cluttering up your system.
You can use Disk Cleanup in Accessories - System Tools.
And
If you go to Control Panel, double click Internet Options,
click Delete Cookies, Delete Files, Clear History.
Give it a few minutes to do this.
You should DeFrag your Hard drive afterward also.

Hi
You might like to have a look at Jim Eshelman's web page for shutdown =
problems:
http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnxp.htm
You can also turn on the 'Shutdown Event Tracker' - **please not that =
this will need a manual edit to the Registry** - which might give you =
some idea of what is causing the problem:
Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the follow key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Reliability =
(ShutdownReasonUI)
To enable SET - ShutdownReasonUI - in the right hand pane has to be set =
to 1
Then to have a look at SET info: Start>Run - then type in =
"eventvwr.msc" - without the quotes. In 'local' click on 'System Log', =
the 'View', 'Find'. In the event id box type either - both without =
quotes - '1074 [planned/unplanned shutdown] or '1076 [unexpected =
shutdown]. You may find some anomalous entries in there.
You might also like to have a look at a couple of command line tools - =
from a command prompt type either "shutdown /?" or "eventquery.vbs /?" - =
both without the quotes.
