I'm not sure if this is a WORD problem or an XP problem.

I have recently upgraded from NT to XP (service pack 2). I also have WORD97.
When I open a file which doesn't have a .DOC extension with WORD by using
"right click & OPEN" and then choosing WORD it opens the file OK but it
displays a file name of "DOCUMENT 1" and treats the file as if it were a new
file. When I go to save the file it is as if I am saving a new file with the
default directory of "MY DOCUMENTS". With NT I didn't have this problem. Non
..DOC files would be opened with their correct file name and could back in
their original format in their original directory. Is there a fix for this
problem?

Open WORD and then use the File/Open menu and browse to the
file you wish to open. WORD will open the file, converting
it to a .doc or other desired extension (using save as).

One thing you could try is re-registering Word.

Start>Run "winword.exe /r" (no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

You may have to enter the full path to winword.exe

"C:\mypath\to Word\somewhere\winword.exe" /r

The poster that advised re-registering Word had a good suggestion.

However, the bit about wanting to save to the My Documents feature is a
"default" setting for XP. That said however, it's a WORD problem.
Confused? Me, too! <g> Most everything will default to My Documents as the
default location for saving. There actually is a good and useful reason for
it, but MS never bothered to tell anyone, so poor guys like you and I learn
it the hard way. Turns out it is useful to use My Documents to build your
data structure in, IFF you move it to another drive so it's separated from
the os. Stupid name though. And, that's a system folder: don't copy it:
Instead right click on it and select Move to move it elsewhere. There are a
few other system folders like that too, so keep an eye out. You can't
delete them easily, but you can move them by the right-click trick.

ANYway, if you open Word, and go to Options, Tools, there is a File
Locations tab. There you can tell Word which drive/directory to save its
files to by default. Change it to your preference, close and restart Word,
and you should be all set.
Be careful if you change other file paths: Some have to remain allocated
to the boot drive unless you know how to also move some of the internals
around, too.

My Documents is, as you already know, a unified location for documents by
user profile. It has some implications for maintaining backups (for
example, the Files and Settings Transfer wizard behaves slightly differently
in how it handles My Documents versus other folders) and is important on a
file share (I presume because of permissions). It goes further than user
convenience.

I tried re-registering but it didn't make any difference. I did experiment
with Wordpad and Notepad and found that neither of these 2 programs have the
problem. Both open the selected file with it's correct file name and save
the file back to where it came from. It's almost as if Word thinks it's
opening a "new" file, hence the name "Document1", and that would also
explain why it wants to save the "new" file in "My Documents" as that's the
default path for new files.

Word's setup program can be used to repair Word's registry settings.

Use Start Menu, then Run and browse to Word's Startup program (usually =
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup) and add /r or /r /y to =
the end of the line.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Setup\Setup.exe /r /y

Switch Meaning=20
/r Reinstalls Word using the options of the last installation.=20
/y [Used with /r] Reinstalls Word using the options of the last =
installation without coping the files.=20

In Word 2000 choose Repair Word from the Help menu.
