Picture doesn't fill Screen

My windows picture does not fill the screen on my monitor.
It use to, then one day it stopped. The Picture was very
distorted but after manipulating the monitor controls (the
horizontal is now at 100% and the vertical is at 0% and the
zoom doesn't work) I was able to use it. There is about an
inch on both sides where there is not any picture only
black screen. The zoom only works when I play games. When I
play some games I get a full picture. But when I exit the
game the picture shrinks again. When booting up I have a
full picture also. But when windows comes on it is
squashed. Any Ideas? I'd really appreciate any help. It's
been like this for months now.

Right click desktop select properties---settings and set screen resolution
to a lower setting.
