View Full Version : e-mail attachments

PS
April 27th 03, 04:12 AM
When I recieve e-mail attachments I try to open them by
selecting the open option, not the save option, and it
takes me to word, which I believe is my default page for
attachments, but a message pops up saying "not a valid
web archive". Could someone please explain this to me, or
better yet tell me how to get these to open besides the
right click method and reading one small line at a time.

Hi PS
In OE - Tools>Options>Security - uncheck -'Do not allow attachments...'. =
This is the default setting for SP1.

already unchecked, not your fault, They are not grayed
out or anything, just when I click on to them it takes me
to choice of open or save, I click open and then it takes
me to word program which I assume ( I know bad word) is
my attachment default reader, that is where I get the
message "Not a valid web attachment" any other help from
you or others is greatly appreciated.

PS, here are some things to try:

1. Save the attachment to the desktop. Then attempt to open it using
another program by opening the other program first, then selecting "Open"
and browsing for the file.

2. Look at the extension for the attachment when it is saved to the
desktop. Is it in HTML? If so, go back and see what you have set under
Internet Options for your default HTML editor: Start>Control Panel>Internet
Options>Programs.

3. You did not tell us what kind of file the attachment is. When you set up
your User profile in XP, you may have made some choices, either initially or
later, which designated Word for this type of file. Could be a different
choice would be better. IIRC, the first time you open a filetype which is
not already designated you get a list of programs to use for opening that
filetype. Could be you hit Word and now Windows thinks that's what you
want. I can't recall where you go to reset this sort of thing, but maybe
someone else will.

Hope this helps. It is really frustrating to not be able to open something.

PS,

I found the place where you can change the association between filetype and
the program which opens it: Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>File Types.

Scroll down to the file type of the attachment, highlight it, then hit
"Change ..." and a list of choices should appear, with the Recommended ones
listed first.

Good luck.

Hi

It would all depend on the format of the attachments. Are they all =
..DOC, .TXT etc files - those that can be opened in Word. Does this =
happen for *all* attachments? BTW - it is not a good idea to 'open' =
attachments. Best way is to save them and then virus check them - 'just =
in case'.

Thanks David for input,I did check attachment, It has
been forward by about 5 people, some say html, some plain
text, but it comes to me as a Word attachment. It opens
on its own to Word, even when I change my default to
Front page? I'll keep working on this, I recieved three
of these from same person maybe thats the problem. I'm
going to try to send one to myself see what
happens.Thanks again!
