laptop will not shutdown-says "installing updates, do not unplug"

Hello
Running Windows XP on my Presario laptop and all of the sudden, when I try
to shut down, I get a message that it is "installing Update 1" and "do not
turn off or unplug your computer".
I do not remember if I have made any changes. Can someone help me get rid of
this or tell me what might be causeing this.

you probably have automatic updates set to automatic lol, settings for
this can be found at system in control panel then windows updates tab
(or summin like that)
