Windows Task Manager

Since installing a recent windows update on my windows xp
professional system the Task Manager does not work...
When Ctrl-Alt-Del is pressed the task manager will appear
briefly before closing automatically!

I can find any mention of this problem in any forums so a
solution to this problem would be much appreciated.

Have done as suggested but also still no change !
