If I open up Windows Explorer, right click on a directory, and uncheck the
"read-only" attirbute, it seems to apply the change. BUT, when I return to
the same directory and look at its properites, they are still read-only...

The read-only attribute you see on XP's folders is misleading. The
folder is not really read-only and you can ignore this. What problems
are you having that are making you want to mess with this?

Malke, THANKS for caring to reply. I am a web developer who is trying to
create web sites on my localhost. I am able to do this all day (and night)
long without any problems. I use ASP. The issue comes when I try to
incorporate an MS Access DB into a web site and write to it. I get an error
that says it is Read Only. I am beyond amateur status with this stuff and I
go into the MMC and change permissions, also I go to the file and folder
directly and change permission but it just won't work. Of note though is that
IF I set up a web site in My Documents - My Webs, I CAN write to a database
all day (and night) long if I want. I am baffled - in Budapest of all places.
;-)

Well, I'm baffled too because what you are doing is outside my area of
expertise. I can barely write "hello world" in Perl and use a wysiwyg
editor for my own website. I can only suggest that you might get better
answers in a developer, Access, and/or web design group. Here is a list
of all the MS newsgroups: http://aumha.org/nntp.htm

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to help you. Good luck.
