XP Hangs when loading

When booting up my PC after the windows XP splash screen
appears and BEFORE the welcome screen appears my pc stops
responding, and hangs on a black screen for about 5mins!
During this time nothing responds, the keyboard doesn't
work (ie Numlock light etc.. does not turn on or off)

So much for XP being fast to load, have had this problem
since the day i bought the pc and installed XP onto it.

System: AMD Athlon XP2000+
256mb ram
XP Professional
Motherboard - ASRock K7VT2 Series
Hercules Muse 5.1DVD Sound Card

Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

have you installed windows update 811493?

if so, go to the add/remove programs in the control panel and remove it.

Have done as suggested but still no change
