View Full Version : System is slugish after Windows Updates?

Within the month of April, since the last
several "Windows Updates" that were automatically
installed, my computer and several other systems using
XP, (2 additional at my location and 5 friends who run
XP) are all suffering from severely hindered performance!
Upon boot up, once at the desktop, if you click any thing
(such as: Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, Outlook
Express, My Computer, open an Office Document, etc...)
the system just hangs and it takes several minutes to
open the window. If you press "Ctrl + Alt + Del"
simultaneously, as soon as the "Task manager" window
pop's up, the system fires up and will open all windows
clicked???!!!

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Wade;
Some computers have issues with 811493 causing a slowdown, others do
not.
The issue seems to be a conflict with Windows Update 811493 and
antivirus applications.
Similar issues reported with McAfee, Norton, EZ Trust and possibly
others.
Uninstall 811493 from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.
If a warning comes up about other applications, ignore it.
Uninstalling through Add/Remove Programs is far better than System
Restore to remove an application or fix.

Microsoft has stated they are working on the cause, so hopefully we
will get some definitive solution real soon.

You can also try these:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/ (Update if you already have it)
Or
http://spybot.eon.net.au/ (Update if you already have it)

Jupiter,
Thanx, I will try removing Q811493!
I just finished reading a bunch of similar posts, and
they all say the same thing!
I am running Norton AV 2003 on all machines and Defrag-
Scandisk- Disk Clean-Up weekly.

Thanx again...
