Clearing taskbar notification items

After opening the Taskbar properties, one can click
on "Customize..." to customize the behavior of individual
notification items (Current Items and Past Items are
displayed).

My question revolves around the list of Past Items. Some
programs listed there on my PC have been uninstalled. How
can one remove items from this Past Items list?

From a previous post by MVP Kelly:

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values from the following
registry key:

HKEY CURRENT
USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\TrayNotify

Open Task Manager and locate the process for Explorer.exe and click End
Process.

In Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER then click OK.
