some of the functions of my winxp home no longer work as they should,
despite regular sfc and chkdsk operations.
the display function in the control panel has lost some of its capabilities
and the windows no longer remember their original size.
is there any way to repair the installation without having to reload
personal programs, setings etc......

I have experienced this problem with the control panel display function. I
have found that the missing tabs are there - you just can't see them! If you
click around at the top edge of the Themes panel they start to appear.
Presumably this is a bug introduced by a hotfix at some point.

I have found a kludge for this!
Right click the desktop and select Properties. The display box only shows
choices of Themes, so change the theme to "My Current Theme" and click
Apply. The missing tabs will then appear.
