I wanted to dowload a form and be able to "fill in the blanks" as I did with
my old windows 98 word program. Now, with windows XP I'm told I can't do
that? I downloaded the form but when I try to open it, I get this message
"this file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this
action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. This is
GREEK to me. Any suggestions? Thanks

Try associating it to WordPad, if that doesn't work try the free MS Word
viewer. Since you want to "fill in the blanks" you must be able to write to
the file, MS Word viewer can't do this.

If none of the above work, buy a copy of Word or try one of the free office
type apps.

First of all, note this has nothing to do with Windows 98 vs
WIndows XP. This is an issue regarding the application programs
that you have or don't have installed in your computer.

What kind of file is the form you're tring to open? Specifically
what is the extension (the the last three characters of the file
name, after the dot)?

If the file's extension is .doc, it's a Microsoft Word document
file. If you're trying to open a .doc file and you're getting the
above message, it's very likely that you don't have Microsoft
Word installed on your computer. If you exepected Word to come
with Windows XP, sorry to tell you that it doesn't come with
Windows XP, nor did it come with Windows 98 (nor with any other
version of Windows). It may have come with your previous
*computer*, because the vendor who sold it you bundled it with
the computer, but it wasn't a part of the operating system.

Post back with more info for advice on how to proceed.

Thanks Ken, I now realize that you are correct and my old HP PC was a
reconditioned model that had many, shall I say "upgrades." I had used it to
fill out leases and it was always so convenient. Thankfully, I still have it
and will just use the old HP for those jobs. Again, thanks for your
assistance.
