sometimes the blunt force approach works. I re-installed xp in upgrade
mode by running setup.exe from the cd. it saved all (ok, most) of my
settings and in the process cleared up whatever problems i was having
with update. now an update scan returns the proper results. i'm sure
there is some hidden pain waiting for me in things i've set up and will
now have to re-do, but at least i can have some confidence in my os
install.
