View Full Version : CPU Usage extremely high with XP

Ever since I updated from Windows 98 to Windows XP, my
CPU usage has been going through the roof. I have an IBM
ThinkPad T20 with PIII 700 MhZ processor.

Under Windows Task Manager the CPU Usage hits 100% very
frequently. It will bounce between 11% and 100%, but very
often will hit 100% repeatedly for 20 - 30 minutes
straight. I never had this issue with Win98.

Under Processes, there are about 30 processes running. I
don't know what I need running and don't need running,
but have adjusted Start Up not to load things like Adobe
Acrobat, DirectCD, and other programs that I use only
occassionally.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill;
Exactly what processes are using the most?

Try these:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or
