Hope this helps.... Here is an answer to how do I
perform a repair install of WinXP without losing all of
my other programs and their links to my registry? I
just did this Friday and yesterday and it worked great!
See MS Knowledge Base Article 315341. Check out 312369
and 301224 first if you have WinXP without SP1 so you do
not lose your settings and links again. Here is an
excerpt from 315341, the procedure I followed succesfully:
0.Change your PC to boot from CD-ROM first.
1.Insert WinXP CD. When the "Press any key to boot from
CD" message is displayed on the screen, pressa key to
start your PC from the CD.
2.The following message is displayed on the Welcome to
Setup screen that appears:
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:
To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair....
To quit Setup....
Press ENTER to set up Windows XP.
3. On the Windows XP licensing Agreement scrreen, press
F8 to agree to the license agreement.
4. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP
is selected in the box, and then press R to repair
Windows XP.
5. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to
reinstall Windows XP........After your done reinstall all
updates to Windows via Windows Updates.
