Scott,

I just posted a similar article today about the same
problem -- Taskbar reverts to classic look.

the only thing that seems to work is to press F8 upon
startup and select Last Known good version/configuration,
etc.

In my opinion, DO NOT try to do a restore point to an
earlier time -- that met with utter disaster for me.

You could also try Safe Mode, then restart regularly as
well. You are right though, there is absolutely nothing
on the KB about this and my machine is very new and very
very clean in terms of apps, drivers, etc.
