Every time I d/l service pack 2, my computer crashes. It may crash whilst
logged on or even during start-up. When I remove it from my system it's
fine. But then Window's update prompts me to install it...so I do...and so
the problem persists.

Any help much appreciated?

Unfortunately, this isn't enough information for us to help you with
your problem installing (or downloading - the post isn't clear) SP2.

Get the latest Windows XP drivers for your hardware.
Verify all your hardware is compatible with SP-2
Verify the installed programs are compatible with SP-2 especially the ones
starting up automatically.
Follow the Service Pack Installation Check list to install SP-2:
