View Full Version : Will SP2 GPO admin templates overwrite SP1's?

We recently completed deployment of SP2 on all our WinXP machines and now I
want to start tweaking the new GPOs that come with SP2 but I'm not sure if
it's wise to just update the administrative templates. Does anyone know if
the SP2 templates will overwrite all the old SP1 settings? Thanks in
advance.

Hi,
Thanks for posting!
Based on the description, Windows XP SP2 will not overwrite the original
SP1 GPOs, it will add some some GPOs such as the GPOs for the firewalls.
You can also download the latest .adm files from here:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=31057
If you install the WinXP SP2 .adm files on the domain controller, but you
don't use WinXP SP2 to edit the GPO settings, you may you get the message
below, install the hotfix that is available in the KB article in the link
below to solve this.
"The following entry in the [strings] section is too long and has been
truncated" error message when you try to modify or to view GPOs in Windows
Server 2003, Windows XP Professional, or Windows 2000

The follwoing article addressed the admin template:

For more information, please refer to the following article:

I hope my information helps. If there is anything that is unclear, please
feel free to let me know.
Thanks & Regards,
