I did a clean install of XP Pro and did the update to SP1.
Updated the firmware on the DVD and the driver on the ATI.
When I access "My Computer" and try to look at my DVD
writer it hangs and gives me the "not responding" message.
When I end the program the desktop dissapears but not the
wall paper, then it comes back a few minutes later minus
the icons in the lower right corner toolbar. When I again
look at the DVD player it shows the contents. Any clues?

system= 3.06GhzP4, MSI GNB MAX mb(latest bios), 1 gig
Corsair Twinx pc2700, Sony DRU 500A DVD writer set as slave
on IDE 0 with WD 120Gb hd, ATI AIW 9700, 430w Truepower ps,
Creative V.92 Modemblaster.

Problem was worse with the DVD writer set as master on IDE
1 by itself. REALLY slow then.

TIA,

Ed

What happens if you remove the DVD completely? It could be a bad drive.
