corrupted files

How do I get the file /windows/system32/config/system
back onto my harddrive. My computer says its missing that
file or its been corrupted and won't let me boot up
WinXP. If I have to reformat, well that's not an option,
too much information would be lost. Please some one help
me restore my computer.... oh it was taking about 5
minutes do shut down if that is any help to what might of
happened.
