I am continually having problems with various components
of windows XP. The latest is when I try to complete
maintenance (Free up space on hard disk) it will not
activate. Or, if it does activate, then it will begin to
search for files to be deleted and stop a quarter of the
way through and do nothing more. The computer does not
freeze and I can close the maintenance window at any
time. I just cannot delete unnecessary files. Please
advise.

Thank you.

Deb;
Reboot to Safe Mode.
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
Then try to delete the files.

Also go to Add/Remove Programs in control Panel and uninstall any
unnecessary applications.

It may be time to purchase a larger hard drive.
