This has to be a troll.

If on the off chance it's not, www.microsoft.com/xp I don't have enough
time to tell you of all the changes.

Windows XP SP2 is the latest Windows operating system.
It is preinstalled on virtually every new computer available

I have no idea what that means, but if you say so.

You're posting to a Windows XP newsgroup. All (or almost all) of
us here use Windows XP.

It's *much* better.

If you're lucky, it's hard drive may be readable. Take it out and
install it temporarily in the new computer as a second drive. You
can then copy files just as you could from a floppy disk.

Buy a new one and then lug the new one and the old one to a computer
shop and tell them you need the files off the old one.

Jinxed?! OMG! It should have been put out of its misery years ago.

Buy the new computer, format the harddrive, and install your old copies
of Dos 6.22/Windows 3.11.

It's easy as pie!

David,

Virtually all new computers that you buy now will have one of two different
versions of Windows installed: Windows XP Professional or Windows
Professional XP Home. Both of them have been updated with service packs
(sp2). Both of these programs are so different technologically from Windows
3.1 that it's like comparing a horsedrawn carriage to a space shuttle. Once
you get accustomed to the new interface however, I think you will like the
tremendous customization capabilities and the access to new hardware and
software technology you will have. If you need help getting up and running
with the new Windows, there are alot of books out there that can walk you
through the new interface.

To move your old data to your new computer... let's hope your hard drive is
still functioning. You will probably want to open up the case of your old
computer, remove the old drive, open up your new computer's case, and then
install it as a slave. Once properly installed, data can be transferred to
your new hard drive. It takes some specialized knowledge to properly set
the jumpers on each drive to get this to work. You may want to take the old
computer in with you and have the technician selling you the computer do
this for you.

There is no such thing as "Windows Professional XP Home".

I know MS started their One Computer term with 3.1, but I don't think MS
started their OEM no tranfer term until Win95. I could be wrong though,
but who cares? MS wouldn't sue an individual over that with WinXP, let
alone a 13 year old OS.

As wind-ups go, this is one of the better ones. We haven't seen Windows for
Workgroups in a while. No one even suggested that he might be running on 16
bit hardware. How soon we forget.

Thanks Dave, I enjoyed it.

If you primarily use DOS you probably won't like XP, look at
Linux instead, it is more command line oriented and does sport a
Windows like environment. Sort of like DOS 6 & Win 3.11 on steroids.
On the other hand if you primarily use Windows 3.11 then you will love
XP. One bit of advice, the horsepower requirements to run either
smoothly have changed drastically!

Well, one thing is for sure, he's gonna struggle if he tries to keep dos

I used to have 1951 Plymouth, with 3 on the column. That was the car my
father had me learn on. Also learned to drive on a 41 oldsmoble as well.
Cars were built like a tank and had some good pickup, considering it was
using a straight 6.

Erm... because it is... Windows XP Service Pack 2 *is* the latest release of
a Microsoft desktop operating system... no trick. Windows 3.11 is about a
million years out of date - if you're problem is genuine, you seriously have
to do some reading up and catching up on what's been happening in the world
for say the last 7-10 years...

Erm... nice signature* - if its yours... does your Mum know you're up this

Assuming that your question is serious, and you're not just just
trolling, Windows XP SP2 is not version 2 of Windows. SP2 is
Service Pack 2; it's the latest release of Windows XP, which is
one of the latest releases of Windows.
