What happens if you remove the DVD completely? It could be
a bad drive.

Drive seems OK 'cause I downloaded and ran a diagnostic
from Sony which checked out good. If I removed it it
wouldn't be slow anymore, would it? 8*)

Somehow I misread that. I thought it was the computer overall that was slow
and you had it narrowed down to the DVD.
