Hi
I've been putting off downloading and installing SP2 because my PC is
running so well. I understand all of the security issues it addresses but do
not want to cause any problems on my PC while it is currently trouble free.
I would be interested in other peoples' viewpoints about this.
Thanks,
David

After having run with SP 2 for about six months, I have no reservation about
saying it works well for me. One thing you want to be sure of is your system
wants to be running well and free of any malware before applying the service
pack. It does create a restore point for you to return to in the event you
wish to remove it. Every pc I have put it on has performed better after
installing it. If you have fully researched it and feel comfortable,
download it first and then install it, don't do the install over the
internet. This is just one admins perspective. Other users will have
differing views, I am sure.

SP2 updates over 5 million lines of code in Windows XP.
It is considered a major security enhancement and provides
much better driver support and better overall performance.
Over 180 million Windows XP users have successfully
download and installed SP2. Why the hesitation?

If you aren't using an Imaging program (Ghost, Drive Image, ..) then
a pre XP SP2 operation would be a good time to invest in one. While
Imaging isn't a 100% foolproof tool/process it can provide protection
against corruption, unanticipated results or just a way to back up your
system state to an earlier configuration.
Allot of the hesitation on Service Packs comes from the history of them
introducing new or undocumented issues. If you have a image set of
your machine before installing, then your risk level drops dramatically.
It's just a good idea to protect your time & investment on your PC.
Most products can be bought for ~$50 and takes just 30-minutes or so
weekly to create an image. Neither the cost or time is too excessive to
have the confidence that your machine & data is protected.

I waited a long time before I installed it as well. Everything is fine after
the install. It went smooth. I had trouble on two computers out of about
30-40. Not too bad. Those two were fixed by reinstalling SP2 later and
downloading the subsequent updates from Microsoft Direct Update.
The most important thing is to have a hardware firewall running in stealth
mode between you and the internet, some real-time spyware protection
software
and a real time anti-virus program.
I recommend the Linksys BEFSX41 (i have used it before), Microsoft
Antispyware (use it now) and Norton AntiVirus (have always used it).

I do not recommend waiting any longer. There are several risks that are
fixed in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and once Microsoft went public with them,
every 2-bit hacker out there knows about them.
You have pretty good odds it will work. You could always use Norton Ghost to
take a snapshot of you computer pre-SP2.

I haven't had such a good experience with XP...personally will not touch it again, as I lost everything on my system upon installing it. All of my friends except one who installed it had problems, with windows failing to start up (as was the case of mine) and again won't touch it....Other people though have had no problems
