sp2 cd-rw not writting

I have XP sp2 upgrade and fro the longest time the cd-rw would not write,
there was an upgrade to fix it but it was only temporary and said only to use
it if you really need it, and if you don't need it wait for the permanant
fix. Is there now a permanant fix, I would like to write again.

Does the manufacturer of your burner have any new firmware
