I have new computer with Windows XP Media. I downloaded Java Runtime but it
won't work and I can't remove it in Add/Remove. The Java icon also won't
open in Control Panel. Checking the registry I found a lot of java
references. What files and registry entries do I remove manually to delete
Java Runtime 5.0 Update 1 so I can reload a fresh copy from Sun?

Did you install the Java Runtime before you installed the Update

It sounds like the installation may have failed. Try reinstalling the
JRE Update 1, and then see if you can uninstall from Add/Remove
programs. Also, if you're interested, JRE Update 2 is available.

Microsoft has an install clean up utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 Use
this tool to remove the Jave and then reboot and reinstall.

In reading the KB article, it appears that the utility is for use only
in conjunction with the Microsoft applications listed in the "Applies
To" section. Are you able to confirm that it can be used with
non-Microsoft applications?
