I have a suggestion, but you need to be very careful when
you are doing this (in other words, do not assume that you
can prevent any programs from running at start up, and for
good reason. There are many programs that are required to
be in the Startup file for proper execution of the OS,
many of which are unrecognizable to most newbie computer
users (just an assumption on my part);-)
To see what I am what I am going on and on about (ha), go
to Start in the left lower corner of your desktop, then to
Run. Type in at the command line "msconfig" without the
quotes, of course. This will take you to the System
Configuration Utility. You can do lots of useful things
here, as well as a lot of damage, so be careful! I cannot
stress this enough!
1) Select the tab "Services" (it's the 5th one from the
left) - here you will be presented with all of the
programs that start up and run in the background upon
booting your computer.
2) DO NOTHING FOR NOW! Instead, there is an excellent site
that will help you understand what is in the Startup
configuration, and if you can safely uncheck a box so that
the associated program is not loaded when you boot up your
computer.
The URL for this site is:
http://www.lafn.org/webconnect/mentor/startup/PENINDEX.HTM
Another good site to look at is:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Good Luck, my friend. I suggest, f I may, that you
subscribe to a few computer mags/journals to get a basic
understanding of what's going on underneath the hood, so
to speak!

Ciao, Kristi
