I am able to get the defrag program to run up to the
status/1st screen, but when I click on the "analyse"
or "defragment" buttons nothing happens. I still have
54% free disk space, so it's not that.
I keep windows updated regularly and, until this problem
occurred a few weeks ago, always defragmented before any
program installation.
Any suggestions?

You may wish to perform a "tune-up" that may help:

1. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View and place a dot next
to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and click "apply".

2. Open MY COMPUTER and double-click your drive, the WINDOWS
folder, and then the "PREFETCH" folder. Delete the contents of =
the
PREFETCH folder but not the folder itself.

3. Next, perform a DISK CLEANUP
(Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup)

4. Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the Command
Prompt window type: CHKDSK /F , and hit enter, answer "yes" and
reboot your computer.

5. Afterward, perform a DEFRAG while booted into SAFE MODE.

Tried that Nicholas, but still no success. Defrag still
refuses to analyse the drive or defragment.
Thanks anyway.
My thoughts are that perhaps I have a missing or
corrupted .dll file, which defrag needs to do its clever
bits. If that's the case, how can I find out which one
needs replacing?
Thoughts anyone?
Jim

I ran into a similar problem as I am using Diskeeper. For some reason after
installing some recent sp2 updates winxp pro would not run chkdsk after a
reboot and this blocked the defrag software from running. I looked for a
way to manually change the dirty bit that I set with Diskeeper when setting
it up to do a boot time defrag. I ended up having to install winxp on
another hard drive, I used an old 2GB drive I salvaged from an old computer.
I then made the new installation the master and the other drive a slave
drive. When I rebooted from the newly installed winxp chkdsk was able to
run and it cleared the dirty bit, thus allowing the defrag the ability to
run again. Afterwards, I simply removed the temporary 2GB drive and
rebooted my system. Now the defrag software runs.........I know it sounds
like a hassle but it was the only thing I could come up with.......I hope
this helps!
